Cooks County alums Roxana Jullapat and Daniel Mattern are finally ready to unveil their new project: Friends & Family, a bakery, café and marketplace opening in Thai Town on Tuesday, May 9.
The restaurant (developed with partners Ash and Niroupa Shah of Trejo's Tacos) will focus on market-driven, vegetable and grain-centric dishes made primarily with local ingredients. The bakery will offer an array of Jullapat's legendary preserves and baked goods—all made with heritage grains—and the marketplace will sell a curated selection of the duo's favorite local provisions and cookbooks.
Highlights of the menu are buckwheat pancakes with house-made preserves and barrel-aged maple syrup; heirloom grain viennoiserie; Dungeness crab quiche with meyer lemon creme fraiche; and the Hippie sandwich, featuring pea mash, avocado, cucumber, sunflower sprouts, feta and herb dressing on sprouted wheat bread.
Starting Tuesday, May 9, Friends & Family will be open for breakfast and lunch from 8am to 2:30pm, Monday through Saturday, with dinner service launching later this summer. On opening day, visitors can sample handmade candy from 3pm to 5pm.
Friends & Family is located at 5150 Hollywood Boulevard.
