After months of back-and-forth, the LA planning commission has officially given the green-light to the Frank Gehry-designed 8150 Sunset Boulevard development project, as Dezeen Magazine reports. The five-building compound is set to be one of the largest in its West Hollywood neighborhood.
The 86-year-old Gehry has made his home in Los Angeles since 1947 and, as anyone who caught last year's LACMA retrospective of his work will surely know, he has made quite a mark on the city—as well as a few other cities along the way.
If you love the look of the Walt Disney Concert Hall, with its swoops of silver metal, then you can think of 8150 Sunset as that, but with the volume turned way up. The tallest of the buildings will be 15 floors high and the complex logs a total of 334,000 square feet.
What will you find inside 8150 Sunset when it opens to the public? There will be a three-story retail building facing the street featuring a bank, shops and dining. From that first building, a pedestrian walkway will allow visitors to explore an interior courtyard plaza with additional retail and space for public events. Two taller buildings will be packed with 249 residential units, 15 percent of which will be renting for below-market rates. One of the roofs will be topped with a landscaped green space, which will be part of 8150 Sunset’s designation as a California Environmental Leadership Development Project featuring LEED silver certification and a zero net additional greenhouse emissions. This building will be the first to meet the standard in LA and the first mixed-used building to meet it anywhere.
