Here's a quick Super Bowl primer: The New England Patriots are playing the Seattle Seahawks, "deflategate" is a thing and LA still doesn't have a football team. With that out of the way, why not skip the nearly four hours of beer commercials and beefy huddles today and spend some time instead enjoying all our city has to offer? You're not the only football anti-fan in LA (i.e. Space Mountain will still have a long wait), but take advantage of the fact that a few million fewer Angelenos will be out and about this afternoon with these five things to do.
See some Warhols and eat some tortellini
Believe it or not, there are other worthwhile events being held on Sunday, in defiance of the holy pigskin. You can peruse tables of posters, catalogs and zines at the LA Art Book Fair, score some dreamy linens at the Matteo sample sale and marvel at an exhibit (in its final weeks) of 102 handpainted and silkscreened Andy Warhol prints at MOCA. Plus, Sunday marks the last day of dineLA, so get your prix-fixe dinner on.
Runyon's a great place to workout and get a sprawling view of LA. If only other people didn't go there, it would be even better. Well, today's probably your best bet to have the trail to yourself on a weekend; we're thinking the Runyon scene—because of course a hiking trail in LA has a scene—will be too busy hashtagging Super Bowl commercials to come out for a late-afternoon run.
Take a stroll around the Huntington Library
Even at its busiest, it's not hard to find tranquility within the 120 acres of these spectacular gardens. And then there's the library collection, the plant conservatory, the art museum, the estate, the mausoleum... Make sure to peruse the new gift shop, check out the latest add-ons to the Chinese gardens and scope out the blooming aloe plants in the desert garden while you're there.
Watch the sun set over the Pacific
Sorry Katy Perry, but we think the setting sun will put on the best show tonight. Pull up to the beach while the afternoon crowds start filing out, unroll a blanket, zip up a sweatshirt and park yourself in the sand until sunset. You can head to Santa Monica or Venice for some quality people watching, but we'll take the longer drive to majestic El Matador any day.
Start catching up on awards season films
You know how the Oscar nominees come out and you'll only seen about two of the films and haven't even heard of twice as many as that? Make a dent in your movie wishlist with an evening at the cinema, including two batches of Oscar-nominated shorts at the Nuart.
