To begin, let me just say that my first few living situations were pretty on par with a couple of the listings I included below. One summer I resided in a living room that doubled as a storage unit. I also lived in a house that consisted of 16 dogs (12 of which were puppies that resulted from two of the dogs mating). And my first place was a rented room from a grandmother of six who frequently offered me the clothing of her recently deceased husband (don't get me wrong... the man had great style but was about double the size of me).
With that said, researching these places brought me back. Maybe not to a place I wanted to be brought back to, but it did bring me back. Hopefully, you'll be amused and if the situation is right and your resume is up-to-date, you too could find yourself residing in a mansion in Encino. More on that in a minute.
1. The sleeping hutch. Do you remember that Seinfeld episode where Kramer's Japanese guests sleep in drawers? Well, this is the artist equivalent. If you like to sleep with noise, don't worry, we've heard the band rehearses pretty late. Needless to say, you must be "pretty bohemian."
It's kind of like a tree house.
2. Bed next to a hoosier cabinet. You haven't truly finished your Craigslist bucket list until you've had a bedroom that wasn't really a bedroom. Now's your chance. Just hope that that an earthquake doesn't cause the fine china to fall on your bed in the middle of the night.
It's pretty cozy.
3. Your slice of an Encino mansion. This is quintessential LA. First off, the person(s) posting the ad ask that prospective renters be "young professionals that have a lot going on for themselves." Rent for the four available rooms range from $2000-5000 per month. And in case the point needs to be hammered home even more, applicants must send a resume. In fairness, you will live in a mansion, have very good connections in the entertainment business (apparently) and will quite possibly be involved in an orgy.
