Immediately recognized by the gleaming golden cylinder on the corner of Wilshire and Fairfax, the former May Company department store was once the "western gateway to the Miracle Mile," according to the Los Angeles Conservancy. Soon to be the home of the museum of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the Wilshire May Company building is a historic Los Angeles landmark. Built in 1939, it is located next to LACMA and across from the Petersen Automotive Museum.
