The Week the Women Came

I’d had a couple of glasses of wine before I watched this documentary about ‘one of the country’s leading psychosexual therapists’, Trudy Hannington, and thank God I didn’t attempt it completely straight. It follows two couples as they explore with Hannington why their sex lives have stalled. There’s no doubting the bravery or honesty of those taking part, or the profound effects that finding a physical relationship become an uneasy ‘companionship’ has had on their lives.

It’s just that, as with so many TV shows, it’s all about the expert: Trudy looking concerned and professional; Trudy’s orange face explaining human nature while she drives along in her Mercedes; Trudy in her consulting rooms grasping the entryphone which looks like a big black knob. After an hour with Trudy, I felt a bit cheap, and that surely wasn’t the intention. Oh, and what they thought they were doing with that title is anybody’s guess.
