Continuing the tradition of Scousers doing a turn for the Windsors, John Bishop follows in the footsteps of Jimmy Tarbuck and the Beatles by appearing at this year’s Royal Variety Performance. He’ll be wrangling enough light-ent talent to fill a conveyor belt on ‘The Generation Game’.
Gary Barlow, Jessie J and Mary J Blige are among those belting out tunes, the musicals slots will be filled by ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’, Lloyd Webber’s ‘Stephen Ward’ and Harry Hill’s sneak preview of ‘I Can’t Sing!’, and Dame Edna, Jason Byrne and Jimmy Carr will be directing respectful jibes towards the royal box, this year occupied by Charles and Camilla. Whether you think it’s the sort of thing that makes this country great or embarrassed to be British will probably dictate whether or not you tune in. But it’s generally safe to expect the expected at the ‘RVP’.
