Apparently Ronnie Barker was very nearly a bank manager. Instead, he decided to become a legendary comedian who looked a bit like a bank manager. This rerun documentary should be a warm tribute to the man who is probably best remembered for bringing us proud recidivist Norman Stanley Fletcher (what chance of getting ‘Porridge’ made today?), candle/handle related confusion and Arkwright the stammering, skinflint grocer.
Barker was also a well-respected writer and performer in more serious roles – expect to be slightly surprised by the range of his career. Michael Grade and David Renwick are among those paying respects in this repeated documentary.
