At the time of writing, the England v Montenegro game which will provide the context for this climactic World Cup qualifying clash was yet to take place. But this should be a huge game and an edgy, tension-riddled occasion. England’s tournament qualification fortunes often seem to have been tied up with those of Poland – the Three Lions have had their moments but there have been disasters too, as the ill-fated 1973 England team will testify.
Poland circa 2013 rely heavily on prolific Bayer Leverkusen striker (and alleged Arsenal target) Robert Lewandowski, and have faded badly in the latter stages of this group. But England have hardly dazzled either – this probably won’t be much fun to watch but, if you’re interested in football, it will be impossible to ignore.
