Perhaps in a bid to steal back a little thunder from the Freeman-Cumberbatch juggernaut, the second series of the US reinvention of Sherlock Holmes sends Holmes (Jonny Lee Miller) back to London with Watson (Lucy Liu) in tow. Not only that, but it introduces a couple of very familiar faces from the canon, in the form of Sherlock’s estranged brother Mycroft (Rhys Ifans) and Scotland Yard bumbler Lestrade (er, Sean Pertwee).
The latter is in hiding after threatening a suspect with a grenade, would you believe (Sherlock is attempting to clear him), while Mycroft has only gone and moved into 221b Baker Street. He also seems to have designs on Sherlock’s partner in crimebusting… The series is glossy, daft and, it has to be said in the face of the BBC’s version, somewhat superficial, but Miller gives it heft.
