We know the drill by now. Exhausting, disruptive but never evil kids try the patience of empathetic, clued-up teachers, before learning some of the errors of their ways by the end of the hour. But it’s a formula as winning as its characters, so you can hardly blame the makers of ‘Educating Yorkshire’ for recycling it.
This week, chatterbox Robbie-Joe and brash Tom come under scrutiny. Young Robbie-Joe is smart but easily distracted (during a sponsored silence he ‘only earnt 10p’), leaving Mrs Uren to take extreme measures to curb his hyperactivity. And no, she’s not taking the piss.
More troubling is Tom, who receives some shattering news and responds with understandable yet increasingly demonstrative frustration. The editing is manipulative and the narratives conveniently tailored, but the end result is as irresistible as always.
