It’s that time of year again. Golden leaves line the pavement, the clocks go forward, chunky knits make their debut, and everyone’s cinnamon and gingerbread latte intake dramatically spikes – guilty as charged on that last one. Though as winter cravings go, nothing holds a candle to escaping to the British countryside for a pre or post-Christmas getaway to get us through the winter slog.

So, whether you’re on the prowl for an autumn reset or you want to usher in the New Year with a magical rural hideaway for two, we’ve made our own list – and, yes, we’ve checked it twice – of the very best Christmas Airbnbs.

The UK’s best Airbnbs for a Christmas getaway

1. The picturebook barn in Buxton

Tucked away between Buxton and Bakewell, this hidden gem is the ideal base for exploring the peak district and tucking into a home-cooked roast while. Who wouldn’t whip out the gravy with such an aesthetically pleasing backdrop? Everything from its original stone walls to the fire stove to the vintage upholstery and river views from the deck brims with historic charm. And with no TV in sight, there’s no better excuse to enjoy trailing through the surrounding woodlands, or in the case of wet weather, you can dust off the board games.

2. The picturesque cottage in Powys

If it’s a little romance you’re after, then this newly renovated bothy will be of service. Situated at the halfway point of Llangattock Mountain, the bothy is surrounded by meadows and mountains. In short, the location is unreal, especially from the hot tub. And when you’re not enjoying a glass of fizz in the tub or curling up by the fire, you can take an evening stroll through Crickhowell high-street where you find lots of quaint tea rooms, pubs, crafts shops – heck, even popping into the newsagents here is worth writing home about. So much rural charm.

3. The luxe wood cabin in Appersett

Set on three acres of private woodland, how's that for a secluded getaway? This one has all the wintry charm we love to see: a gorgeous interior entirely constructed of wood, a comfy bed with a skylight, roll-down blinds, a deck with a fireplace and the odd red squirrel, though they aren't part of the decor... with stunning views Widdale Beck, the cabin offers a real sense of calm for those who need a New Year reshuffle.

4. The converted cowshed in Landscove

We don’t know how, but this one has a way of making you feel like you’ve entered the modern stone age, and we’re not mad at that. Who would have thought a converted cow barn could be so stylish? Featuring interiors comprised of natural materials, some of which were hand built like the kitchen - very cool – this barn is the definition of understated luxury. Touches like the limewashed walls, shadowy nooks, and the Scandi log burner makes this a particularly cosy affair. When you want to get some fresh air there’s the cobbled patio, a shared garden and the stunning sunsets Strete Gate beach a few miles away.

5. The farm cottage in North Pembrokeshire

Truthfully, the cottage had us with those scarlet red windows. Very Christmassy.  And since you’re right near the coast, the historic village of Nevern, you’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to enjoying a scenic stroll through the neighbouring woodlands, beaches, and the Mountain of Angels - of course, with plenty of coffee shops and pubs for a pint along the way. As for the interiors? We can confirm that it is quite peaceful and cosy indeed inside. Big enough for two guests, and one very well-behaved doggo, the cottage is spread across two floors: an open-plan kitchen and living area on the top, and a bedroom and bathroom below. Ideal if you want to feel shut off from the world for a few days.

6. The secluded country cottage in Nettlebed

Just an hour outside of central London, this gorgeous two-bedroom home in the heart of the Chilterns could make just about anyone want to pack their bags. With boatloads of classic contemporary style, this bungalow hits just the spot when you want to escape the bustle and begin a gentle reset for the new year. For us, the sitting room stole the show – the comfy L-sofa is a match made in holiday-read heaven (we swear by it), with the vaulted ceiling and open fire making it feel like home.

7. Shepherd’s hut in North Yorkshire

Tucked away on a small holding between Barton and Middleton Tyas, this Shepherd’s Hut makes for a peaceful countryside retreat for two. Here, you’ll be surrounded by wildlife and little else to interrupt.  With plenty to entertain yourselves, you can sit out on the deck to enjoy views overlooking the pond or cosy up in blankets while playing a game of chess. To Round off the evening, there’s the George Foreman grill, or better yet, skip straight to the woodfired hot tub. We hear it's very romantic...

8. The bright and airy flat in Saint Leonards

Situated on the Marina, this stunning two-bed flat is a must-see in our eyes. The sea views from the terrace alone are worth the trek to Hastings. But of course, this place has so much more up its sleeve. Designed by a pair of architectural and interior whizzes to create a calming cottage-like oasis right by the sea where up to four can recoup.

9. The guest house in Gate Helmsley

Get the log burner going in this comfy, modern barn conversion situated in Gate Helmsley, just an easy bus ride into York. Thoughtfully designed, the space oozes warmth, with earthy greens complimented by orange, walls lined with fun, contemporary art pieces, planters, ceramics and design pieces that make this barn a very trendy affair for two. Amenities include a kitchenette, wireless speakers, a fireplace and a flat-screen TV. Sadly, there’s no hob or microwave, but that didn’t stop us from making a killer spread to enjoy with a bottle of red.
