Covent Garden’s gorgeous newly opened art deco Garden Cinema plays host to this one-day mini film festival presented by Cinema Italia UK and organised by researchers from the University of Bath’s Politics department. A double header of excellent films about women and the Mafia will be screened on the day. First up is Kim Longinotto’s award-winning 2019 doc ‘Shooting the Mafia’, a fascinating piece about Letizia Battaglia, an Italian photographer whose career revolved around photographing the life and crimes of the Mafia in and around Palermo. This is followed by Jonas Carpignano’s ‘A Chiara’, which premiered in Cannes last year and centres on a teenager’s discovery of her father’s ties with the Mafia in Calabria. There’ll also be a discussions between director Kim Longinotto and documentary journalist and academic, Carol Nahra, and a post-screening talk about ‘A Chiara’ with Guardian journalist Clare Longrigg, who authored a book on Mafia women.
