It’s been 75 years since the HMT Empire Windrush docked in Essex bringing the first post-war migrants from the Caribbean to Britain, changing the UK forever. To celebrate the historic occasion Brixton Village is hosting a huge all-day commemorative party in its courtyard backdropped by a brilliant mural designed by local graffiti artist Bunny full of inspiring stories of 21 trailblazing figures who were children of the Windrush community, including Grace Jones, Gus John, Jah Shaka and Benjamin Zephaniah. Brixton Project and Just Vibez will be hosting the shenanigans with a performance from Sharlene-Monique at 7pm, plus other artists performing songs inspired by the Windrush. There’ll also be plenty of Caribbean street food from some of the Village’s long-time traders as well as activities for children like Live Calypso. Can’t make it on Thursday? The party continues on Saturday with DJ sets from the likes of Dubplate Pearl and live performances from Lionhaire.
