Inspired by the flamboyant style of its namesake, iconic Colombian football star Carlos Valderrama, this Upper Street joint promised to be much more than your average sports bar when it opened earlier this year. And it continues to stay true to its word in the build-up to the 2022 World Cup. It’s teamed up with Patterns of Play to take a nostalgic look through some of the tournament’s sexiest shirts from the last 30 years, selecting 23 of the best and emblazoning the backs with silly bar-based puns: Schnapps Stam, Neymartini. You get the idea. The lettering and numbers painstakingly replicate the originals and the geeky design details are all there, complete with custom sleeve badges. As well as the retro shirts, there’ll be drinks on arrival, DJs and a screening of a classic 90s World Cup match. The shirts will hang proudly in Valderrama’s until the tournament finishes, before being placed into an online auction. All profits raised will be donated to Stonewall FC, a leading LGBTQ+ club that provides a safe space for anyone who wishes to get involved with football.
