To mark 500 years since the Corporation of Trinity House was granted a Royal Charter by Henry VIII 'so that they might regulate the pilotage of ships in the King’s streams', the maritime organisation is opening the doors to its grand, 18th century Tower Hill residence. Usually closed to the public, Trinity House is still in use by the Corporation, and is the working office of the General Lighthouse Authority.
On the open day (and on Sat Sept 20 as part of Open House London), visitors will have a chance to explore five of the building's rooms and peruse the nautical artefacts and antiques exhibited within – including the giant brass bell from the Royal Yacht Britannia, taken out of service in 1997. A must for all nautical history fans.
