Ninety-six globes will be popping up in Trafalgar Square for this weekend-long outdoor exhibition. Each one is handpainted to reflect a moment or stage in British history and explores how the past – particularly the UK’s relationship with the Transatlantic Trade in Enslaved Africans – will shape the future. Curated by artistic director Ashley Shaw Scott Adjaye, the globes will explore a whole range of themes and encompass an enormous variety of interpretations and creative styles. Look out for work from emerging talents and internationally recognised artists including Vashti Harrison, Phoebe Boswell and The World Reimagined’s founding artist Yinka Shonibare CBE. Visitors will also be able to dive into an online collection of short, accessible stories that bring the paintings to life.
Like anything you see? 18 globes will be auctioned by Bonhams through an online auction from 17 to 25 November. Proceeds will help support The World Reimagined’s learning programme, the artists involved in creating the globes and the establishment of a grant-making programme for racial justice projects and organisations.
