If you're the sort of person who loves the historical bits in 'Bake Off', The British Museum of Food is going to seem a real treat. Edible experiment magicians Bompas & Parr are opening (temporarily) the world's first cultural institution devoted to food and its history, evolution, science, sociology and art. Visitors will see how food makes its way through our bodies thanks to a gastroenterologist's swallowable pill-cams, enter a chocolate wonderland in which they'll pit taste against hearing, wander into a tropical butterfly experience and browse a collection of historical British menus.
The museum aims to educate as well as entertain, and nutrition and health information will be fed into the exhibits. It's hoped that following this three-month run The British Museum of Food will find a permanent home and will build its collection to become a national resource. Which is unsurprising given its motto: 'From Field to Table, Mouth... and Beyond'.
