Time Out is teaming up with Premier Inn to map out the best things to do around Britain, each within easy reach of a Premier Inn hotel. We’ll be sending our local writers on a mission to champion that one brilliant thing you simply have to do while you’re staying at each place. And to get us started, we want to know what you love the most.

In return, we’ll automatically enter you into our prize draw, with the chance to win one of five great weekend breaks for two.

To get you thinking, we’ve selected a few personal picks below to get you inspired. All you need to do now is tell us your own and head to www.timeout.com/premierinn/win to enter our ‘one thing’ competition.

If you do one thing in Belfast

‘We’re spoilt for choice in Belfast. You could sit in the MAC (the Metropolitan Arts Centre) with a coffee and watch the world go by, or walk around Ulster Museum, which is endlessly fascinating. But my absolute favourite thing is that you only have to drive ten minutes and you can be walking along the beach.’ Brendan Hughes, TV producer, Tern, Belfast

If you do one thing in Edinburgh

‘My favourite place in Edinburgh is Sneaky Pete’s, a 100-capacity sweatbox that’s hosted some of the best club and gig experiences of my life. From the well-stocked bar to the trippy, LCD Soundsystem-inspired murals on the walls (not to mention the impeccable programming), it’s an absolute gem.’ Niki Boyle, Edinburgh-based writer

If you do one thing in Cambridge

‘I would recommend that everyone who comes to Cambridge wanders through at least one of the university colleges and goes on a punting trip down the River Cam.’ Sam Owens, co-founder of Thirsty

If you do one thing in Manchester

‘My new favourite place in the city is Mackie Mayor, a recent addition to the food scene in Manchester. It’s a former Victorian meat market that has been lovingly restored into a brilliant and atmospheric food hall, with a range of vendors serving really top-notch food and drink. There are too many great stalls to mention, it’s great day or night, but I would definitely make sure you try one of the delicious weekend brunches or Sunday roasts. Janina Mundy, marketing director, Manchester International Festival
