As part of its Longitude Punk'd Season (till Sunday January 4 2015), the Royal Observatory Greenwich will be screening a series of classic Steampunk science fiction movies. The films will be followed by talks from astronomers and experts about the science behind the stories. June's offering, which will be shown in the Peter Harrison Planetarium, is Parisian-born director Luc Besson's 2010 cult classic 'The Extraordinary Adventures of Adèle Blanc-Sec' (Thursday June 26 7pm-9pm; 11+). The film, which will be shown in French with English subtitles, follows the redheaded heroine on a mission from Egypt to Paris, dodging an evil archaeologist and an escaped Pterodactyl, as she attempts to heal her comatose sister.
On Thursday July 31 (7pm-9.30pm; 11+) 'The Adventures of Baron Munchausen', directed by Terry Gilliam, is a fantasy comedy chronicling the tall tales of eighteenth-century nobleman Baron Carl Freidrich von Munchausen. The final film, 'City of Lost Children', is directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet, creator of 'Amélie' (Thursday August 28 7pm-9.30pm; 15+; subtitles). It's set in a surrealistic society in which a scientist kidnaps children to steal their dreams and prolong his own life. Tickets for the screenings can be booked online, or by phone, in advance.
