In the canon of British meat-and-pastry snacks, the pork pie stands firm, its jelly layer glistening provocatively. There's no beating its crisp, sturdy walls and thickly porky filling, but individuals may like to play with ratios, flavours and even key ingredients to create their ultimate pub snack. At the Princess Victoria's Great British Pork Pie off chefs from the likes of The Dairy, Newman Street Tavern and Social Eating House will do just that in their attempt to be crowned champion of pork pies. Their efforts will be judged by Selfridges' restaurants director Hannah Bass, 'Pie Man' Andy Bates and chefs Rowley Leigh and Henry Harris, while food writer Joe Warwick will compere. The winning pie will be stocked in Selfridges food hall for the weekend of March 7-8: the closing few days of British Pie Week. Tickets include a free bottle of Portobello Brewing Co. Star beer and samples of the pork pies, and all proceeds from ticket sales will be donated to Action Against Hunger. Book in advance on 0208 749 5886.
