On this tour of London’s future landmarks guide Stephen Senior takes a detailed look at existing and proposed developments along the Thames embankments. Between Millennium Bridge and Westminster Bridge the route takes in the Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall and the brutalist architecture of the Hayward Gallery as well as the Oxo Tower and Denys Lasdun’s National Theatre. Senior also includes the extension of the Tate Modern by Herzog & de Meuron, which is currently underway, and at proposals for the Doon Street tower and other new tall buildings. The Shell Centre and David Chipperfield’s plans for Elizabeth House (a 29-storey tower next to Waterloo station) are also discussed. The tour will finish on the north side of the river at Michael Hopkins’s Portcullis House. C
