You get a generous dose of death on lots of London walking tours thanks to our rich history of plague, fire, beheadings and general brutality, but for number of deaths per metre you won't beat Murder Mile Walks. Enthusiastic host Michael Buchanan-Dunne leads the grisly-minded on a two-hour shuffle around Soho, revealing the actual facts behind deaths that have grabbed headlines and massacres that have been swept under London's seedier carpets.
Though the jokey approach to Dennis Nielson's crimes felt a little too close to the bone (as it were) given that they happened in living history, it's very apparent that the tone makes light of the gore rather than the tragedy. Buchanan-Dunne has trawled historical documents to uncover the truth about both criminals and victims and has a real talent for digging out the interesting (and often grim) details, making his storytelling memorable even if you've already read a fair few serial killers' Wikipedia entries. This tour's no exercise in, well, exercise, but it's definitely guilty of uncovering central London's most interetsing true crimes. Ashleigh Arnott
