David Watkin discusses John Nash's plans two centuries ago for the creation of what became Regent Street and Regent's Park, describing Nash's town planning principles, how he involved other architects in the project, notably Soane and Cockerell, how he designed Regent's Park as a garden city with houses for people of all classes, and how, as George IV's favourite architect, he transformed Buckingham House into Buckingham Palace. The talk is part of the gallery's contextual lecture series, which examines the social, political, and philosophical context of the year of its founding, 1811. A limited number of tickets are available for individual talks and booking is essential.
