While we may be drawing closer towards the end of the summer holidays, they’re not over yet, and there’s still loads of summer fun left to be had in London. And if you’ve got any little dreamers in your household, might we suggest a visit to Shaftesbury Memorial Fountain at Piccadilly Circus between August 20-25?

On these dates, the fountain will play host to a new installation, ‘Good Things Come to Those Who Wait’, by artist Yinka Ilori MBE, presented by Art of London. Influenced by Greek mythology and in particular, by all of the impossible possibilities symbolised by Pegasus the winged horse, the artwork encourages visitors to dream big, and to know that they can achieve whatever they set their minds to – a brilliant message for children and young people on the cusp of a new school year.

The artwork represents the first time in 132 years that the fountain has played host to new sculptures, and consists of two Pegasus-esque figures atop huge, 23-foot-tall plinths, the spectacle of which will delight family members young and old. The platforms are emblazoned with affirmations and inspiring messages, designed to help everyone who sees them overcome barriers and believe in themselves – it’s truly another gallery without walls from Art of London, a spectacle for all to enjoy.

At lunchtimes on weekdays while the installation is live, you can look out for giveaways including themed activity sheets and colouring pencils – and if you’re really wanting to make a day of it, here are our picks of the surrounding area’s best summer family entertainment…

Kids Week from Official London Theatre
A West End show is always a failsafe way to have some fun. Until Friday September 6, thanks to Official London Theatre and its Kids Week initiative, under-17s go free with a paying adult at a number of amazing West End performances, including family favourites like ‘The Tiger That Came to Tea’ at Theatre Royal Haymarket, and ‘Terrible Tudors’ at the Apollo.

Paralympics screenings at St. James’ Market
In keeping with ‘Good Things Come to Those Who Wait’’s very uplifting message, go and see some spectacular athletes doing their thing on the big screen at St. James’ Market, for free! While you’re there, too, make sure you catch the very informative ‘The Story of the Games’ exhibition in the Market Pavilion.

Check out even more art
After a trip to Ilori’s installation, keep the arty vibe going – the heart of London is full of fabulous galleries catering to families this summer. Art buffs aged seven and up can take part in the National Portrait Gallery’s self-guided ‘History Detectives’ tour, to learn more about the works on display, while the National Gallery is hosting ‘Summer on the Square’ – a free festival of art on Trafalgar Square – as part of its NG200 bicentennial celebrations.

Enjoy delicious eats and treats
A long day of getting inspired can leave you pretty hungry, but luckily, there’s plenty of great stuff to eat nearby. Young vegans will love the planet conscious veggie spot Mildred’s, on St. Martin’s Lane, while Americana on Haymarket – where each adult meal purchased comes with a free kids’ meal – is a great option for classic American style burgers, fries, ribs and more. Ramen Yokocho on Panton Street is great for family-friendly noodle dishes – and where sweet treats are concerned, try the Kids’ Afternoon Tea at The Sofitel St James, or even a traditional Knickerbocker Glory at the famous Fortnum’s Parlour.
