This Hare Krishna event at Bhaktivedanta Manor Krishna temple celebrates both Holi and Gaura Purnima. From 3.30pm traditional drama and dance and music is performed in front the Manor’s beautiful shrine and devotees serve free vegetarian food. The throwing of Holi colours takes place from 4pm in memory of the young Krishna, who would playfully shower people with colours but was so well loved he went unrebuked. A traditional bonfire is lit at 6pm to commemorate the saint Prahlad who, legend has it, was cast into a blazing fire by Holika but was not burned and became a symbol of faith and purity. Also being celebrated on this occasion is the birth of Lord Chaitanya, considered an incarnation of Lord Krishna. He lived about 500 years ago and initiated the public chanting of the Hare Krishna mantra for which the Hare Krishna movement is known.
