What would you love to do in Salzburg? That’s the big question we put to Time Out’s readers, who came back with a ton of great answers. Only one person, however, was lucky enough to win the chance to live out their dream holiday, thanks to British Airways.

Ruby Palmer won us over with her answer and won the competition in the process. She wanted to take her partner, Hugh Sharman, to Salzburg’s grand and beautiful Hohensalzburg Fortress for his thirtieth birthday. Ruby also mentioned that she’d love to go on a ‘Sound of Music’ tour in the city (because you can’t go to Salzburg and not do that, frankly), and that she wanted to explore the Old Town, finding Salzburg’s hidden gems – which would include sampling local food and beer, of course.

How could we refuse Ruby and Hugh that idyllic holiday? The trip was theirs. After flying out to the city courtesy of British Airways, the couple spent a glorious, sunny weekend in Salzburg, living out their dream and taking in the city’s sights, culture and scenery at every opportunity.

Here’s what they got up to, in their own words. And if you’re feeling inspired after reading about Ruby and Hugh’s adventures, the timing couldn’t be better, as British Airways are offering low-cost fares to the city. Visit ba.com/Salzburg to find out more and book.

Starting the holiday in style

Travelling in business-class was great and we enjoyed the champagne! It was even better when Hugh got presented with a birthday cake from the British Airways staff on-board. Everyone was really helpful and lovely the whole way, and it was a great start to a magical trip!

Soaking up the atmosphere of the Old Town

Walking around the Old Town was lovely, so many little cobbled streets that lead to markets and galleries. The museums around Residenzplatz Square were some of the best we’ve ever been to.

Soaking up the views

Getting the FestungsBahn funicular up to the top of the Festungsberg mountain to see the Hohensalzburg Fortress was incredible. Having a cocktail at the top while overlooking the city was pretty amazing too.

Getting creative with the Salzburg Card

The Salzburg Card was a great touch, as it meant we could do impulsive stuff like go to the zoo, which we weren’t planning on! The zoo was amazing, as it was built into the top of the mountain, and the views from up there were incredible.

Following famous footsteps

The ‘Sound of Music’ tour was the thing I was looking forward to the most, and seeing the gazebo used in the film, in the grounds of Hellbrunn Palace, was great!

Drinking with the locals

We found a great, local beer garden, called the Augustiner Bräustübel. You pick what size beer you want and then fill it up yourself. There was such a good atmosphere there, especially as it was so sunny.
