Woody Allen maintains his frenetic one-film-a-year pace with this updated riff on ‘A Streetcar Named Desire’. Cate Blanchett – already receiving raves for her performance from US reviewers – plays the wife of a Bernie Madoff-like crooked Wall Street trader, who reluctantly moves to San Francisco to be with her sister (Sally Hawkins in her second film with Allen). Louis CK, Michael Stuhlbarg and Bobby Cannavale fill out a supporting cast surely suited well to Woody’s caustic zingers and neuroses. This looks like a welcome return to meatier dramatic work for the comedy great after the light soufflés of ‘Midnight in Paris’ and ‘To Rome with Love’.
In UK cinemas from September 27, this is a great opportunity to see the film for free, in advance of its general release.
