As you can imagine the BFI takes film extremely seriously, which is why this festival isn’t just celebrating the best moving pictures created by great minds and artists. It’s also extolling the virtues of film: 16mm celluloid, seamless reel changes and old-school projectors. For this fest, the BFI National Archive’s curatorial team has curated a programme from the national collection of film and television highlighting underseen titles, different formats and some brilliant prints. Many screenings will show original release prints. Look out for four nitrate print screenings (the first public nitrate screenings in the UK for over a decade), including a 1932 nitrate print of Alexander Korda’s ‘Service for Ladies’ – the oldest film print ever projected in the UK. Other treats include special presentations of ‘Jaws’, a 3D screening of ‘Dial M for Murder’, a new 35mm print of ‘Rebel Without a Cause’ and an ultra-rare screening of a legendary drama-documentary ‘Louisiana Story’ filmed amid the bayous exploited by America’s burgeoning oil industry.
