Wilko: Love and Death and Rock and Roll

Jonathan Maitland’s new play concerns the legendary British rock guitarist Wilko Johnson, who powered pub rock legends Dr Feelgood through their early success, had a huge influence in punk, joined Ian Dury and the Blockheads, starred in Game of Thrones and gobbled a hell of a lot of drugs before a dramatic final act in which he was diagnosed with terminal pancreatic cancer, made his peace with death, and then ended up living another decade. There’s lots to be going on there, from a play that Johnson gave his blessing to before his death in 2022.
