Poet Caroline Bird brings fresh eyes to Euripides's ever-stirring tragedy, placing fallen Trojan queen Hecuba and her fellow women, topically, in a prison mother-and-baby unit. It's directed by Gate artistic director Christopher Haydon, as part of 'Aftermath' – his second season of programming, focusing on the impact of conflict. The cast includes Louise Brealey, playing no fewer than three different Greek princesses; Sam Cox as a genuinely terrifying Menelaus; and Lucy Ellinson as the Chorus, cannily transformed into a terrified pregnant woman strapped to a bed. iI's been widely acclaimed, including by Time Out, and has recently added three extra December performances to its sell-out run.
