While researching a recent book, the eminent historian Orlando Figes unearthed a fascinating cache of letters between Gustave Flaubert and Ivan Turgenev. It inspired him to write this, his debut play, a comedy set amongst Paris’s nineteenth-century literary superstars that follows the skint Flaubert as he contemplates finding a job in an effort to sort out his finances without dumbing down his precious writing.
