The great trumpeter and lyricist Hugh Masekela fronts this theatrical tribute to a century of song produced by migrants from communal and ancestral lands to the townships of cities across the African continent. Originally staged last year in Johannesburg as 'The Rehearsal: 100 Years of South African Music', James Ngcobo's 29-track production (ranging from Fela Kuti and Ladysmith Black Mambazo to the old gospel of the American South) takes the form of an extravagant jazz gig, with a live band, choreography and narration. Sowetan singer Sibongile Khumalohe also appears, and the musical director is Ezbie Moilwa.
