Arnold Wesker’s ‘Roots’ is a landmark of British theatre that’s inevitably somewhat less famous than John Osborne’s epochal ‘Look Back in Anger’, the play it’s paired with in the Almeida’s Young and Angry rep season. Wesker’s play is perhaps a little younger than it is angry, but if anything it’s stood the test of time the better of the pair – though the point of the season is ito breathe new life into both.
Morfydd Clarke – aka Galadriel from ‘The Rings of Power’ – takes point on this one to star as Beatie Bryant, a young woman returning home to her family in rural Norfolk, inflamed with new political ideas and excited for the arrival of her firebrand boyfriend Ronnie.
It’s directed by Diyan Zora and co-stars the rep company of Michael Abubakar, Iwan Davies, Billy Howle, Eliot Salt, Sophie Stanton, Ellora Torchia, Tony Turner and Deka Walmsley.
