What is National Theatre Live?

Generally known by the abbreviation NT Live, it’s the National Theatre’s strand of filmed productions that screen in cinemas.

Though it started off focussing on individual ‘event’ performances that streamed live from the NT itself as they were performed, productions now often don’t hit cinemas until after the show has ended its run (though they’re still filmed live in front of an audience).

It also incorporates far more than just the NT – pretty much any recorded contemporary British stage production that goes into cinemas these days does so via National Theatre Live.

What are the current NT Live highlights?

David Tennant in ‘Good’, James Graham’s ‘Best of Enemies’ and the return of Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s ‘Fleabag’ are all obvious imminent highlights. Recent hits include Jodie Comer in ‘Prima Facie’, which you can expect to return to cinemas at some point after massive success last year.

How can I stream the shows online?

The NT’s subscription streaming service National Theatre at Home is a player that offers a wide array of NT Live content. The selection of plays is deliberately not comprehensive, ie it rotates rather than contains the entire archive. But it’s a much larger selection than you’ll find in the cinemas at any given time, and also includes smaller National Theatre productions that didn’t run in cinemas.
