The great black American playwright Suzan-Lori Parks is still comparatively under-seen in the UK, and here – 21 years after it premiered Stateside – is the first major Brit production of her play ‘In the Blood’, kicking off Michael Longhurst’s second season as Donmar artistic director. The 1999 drama is a rewrite of Nathaniel Hawthorne great American novel ‘The Scarlet Letter’, and follows a single mother named Hester as she tries desperately to provide for her children. Ellen MacDougall of Gate Theatre fame does the directing honours.
