Ghosts is, of course, Henrik Ibsen’s once infamous 1881 classic, which provoked fury when first performed in English thanks to its bleak depiction of a shattered family stricken with veneral disease (and worse). Quite how it plays out in this new version is to be seen: despite the nane not having changed, this is the latest adaptation of a classic from writer Gary Owen and director Rachel O’Riordan – their previous, Wales-set collaboriations Iphigenia in Splott and Romeo & Julie have constituted pretty radical reworkings of the source material and the same may well go for Ghosts. The plot sounds essentially the same with a few details changed: Helena has devoted her life to building a children’s hospital in memory of her late husband; but on the cusp of its opening things go very wrong when her beloved, troubled son Oz returns home. Victoria Smurfit and Callum Scott Howells star.
