The Battle of Cable Street is a popular subject for adaptation: the 1936 clash between Oswald Mosley’s British Union of Fascists and a diverse working-class opposition who wouldn’t let then march through London Jewish East End is the sort of story that makes you feel good about being British, unless you’re a fascist. Opening scarcely a week after the West End transfer of Tracy-Ann Oberman’s ‘The Merchant of Venice 1936’, ‘Cable Street’ is a musical by Tim Gilvin and Alex Kanefsky that traces the events leading up to the clash and the Battle itself. Adam Lenson directs a cast of 11 plus full band that’ll be bursting out of Southwark Playhouse, and is largely sold out already.
