The Gate Theatre has been in the wars recently, losing its artistic director (Ellen McDougall), its old Notting Hill venue, and its arts council funding. Now it’s in the curious position of being a part-time theatre – because it has moved to Camden’s Theatro Technis building, which it shares – with an interim artistic director in Stef O’Driscoll. You have to think that things could be going better for it, but it feels like it’s coming out swinging with this intriguing bit of programming: the UK premiere of Tony-nominated US playwright and ‘Slave Play’ director Robert O’Hara’s ‘semi-autobiographical, kaleidoscopic, black queer fever dream of connected vignettes’ about growing up black and gay in America. Tristan Fynn-Aiduenu directs a cast of Prince Kundai, Bimpé Pacheco, DK Fashola, Luke Wilson and Roly Botha.
