Nestled snugly in an old East End workshop that exudes Dickensian quaintness, this small furniture maker produces a distinctive range of birch plywood and laminate pieces, transforming raw materials into decidedly modern furniture. Named after the 1862 John Ruskin book advocating the principles of local craftsmanship, Unto This Last does exactly that – combining simple design with sophisticated computer software to produce well-priced cabinets, bookcases, chairs and beds, plus a small range of accessories like tealight holders, fruit bowls and placemats. The finished products have a beautifully fluid, organic appearance, and are bold enough to act as statement pieces. We particularly liked the Square shelves (from £180) that can be free-standing or wall-mounted. Look out too for the undulating Wavy Bench (£280) and the 4ft Standing lamp (£90). Branch also at Arch 72, Queens Circus, SW8 4NE (7720 6558).
