East London’s latest must-be-seen-at shopping venue has the unlikely setting of a Dalston junior school playground. The London Car Boot Sale, set up by veteran ’booters Carol Karpellus and Steven Beastall, has inadvertently become a new focal point for trend-obsessed locals browsing for fashion samples and retro knick-knacks. Art gallery patrons manager Sue Livermore visits the sale each week, as a buyer and sometimes a seller. ‘It still feels like a bit of a local secret – but it’s getting bigger each week. In the past few weeks I’ve picked up some vintage Babycham glasses, a Missoni scarf and some Falke tights. Unworn, of course!’
