Best Duvets

If you want a duvet that will see you through all seasons and you’ve got cash to splash, plump for the Jasmine All Season. This sumptuous bedfellow is made from 100 percent, Grade A, long-fibre Mulberry silk, which is the fanciest most expensive silk out there. Of course, while it comes in at a hefty £300, you are in fact getting three duvets for the price of one and they’re all covered in 300 thread count cotton sateen. All at a super king size, this three-in-one is a 9 tog and a 4.5 tog that button together to form a 13.5 tog, so you’re covered whatever the weather.

We don’t get many heatwaves in Blighty, but occasionally they surprise us and when they do the old duvet doesn’t half start to feel clingy and heavy. We’d recommend stocking your cupboard with the John Lewis Synthetic Soft Touch for when such an occasion next hits. It’s only 4.5 tog and filled with a siliconised polyester microfibre blend, so it’s wonderfully lightweight. The cover is a soft, brushed polyester and the whole thing is machine washable up to 60ºc to ensure any mites are truly zapped. Plus, as it’s synthetic, it dries much quicker than a natural material duvet.

How they turn a bunch of plastic bottles into a duvet, we’ve no idea but, frankly, we don’t care, because the Silentnight Eco Comfort duvet is super soft. At least 32 bottles get recycled to make each one and it’s done right here in the UK – in Manchester to be precise, so the carbon footprint is very respectable indeed. It’s a lightweight, 10.5-togs covering, so may not suit those who get particularly cold in winter, but it’s a good choice if you want something all year round. Plus, it’s machine washable and affordable with a price ranging from £30 (single) to £45 (super king).

For almost three decades The White Company London has been making upmarket, stylish homeware – largely in crisp white – that simply oozes luxury. Unsurprisingly, this comes at a price, but you get what you pay for. Their Hungarian Goose Down quilt, which ranges from £180 to £355, is the ultimate winter warmer, a 10.5 tog cover filled with 90 percent down and ten percent feather, encased in 329-thread-count cotton. It also comes complete with button holes and cufflinks so you can fit two together in the colder months. There’s an impressive ten-year guarantee too, but be warned once the packaging is opened, they won’t accept a return.

Silentnight have produced the answer to all our prayers. No, not a money tree, a dual-tog duvet. Like a make-your-own pizza for the bedroom, their Yours and Mine quilt comes filled with a lighter tog on one side and a heavier tog on the other to keep hot vs cold couples happy. They’re available in either 4.5/7.5 or 10.5/13.5 tog and stuffed with a hollowfibre material, which is encased in a cotton-like cloth made from microfibre. Stick them in the washing machine to keep them fresh and rest easy knowing that not only are Silentnight duvets made in the UK, but they come with a five-year manufacturer’s guarantee too.

Simba is fast becoming a leading name in the bedding department thanks to its ‘Stratos’ technology, which takes inspiration from astronauts to provide a product that keeps you regulated. Their Hybrid duvet combines cotton and recycled synthetic fibres for maximum warmth and minimum weight. The filling is stitched into square pockets, so coverage remains even and you don’t have to deal with any annoying lumps in the night. And for those concerned with sustainability, you’ll be pleased to know that Simba is accredited with ISO 14001, which means their environmental impact is monitored and maintained at a low rate.

Forever fighting with a bulky duvet that your too hot with but too cold without? Get rid of it and get yourself a Soak & Sleep 100% Cotton cover. It’s incredibly lightweight – in fact it looks more like a comforter than a duvet – and because cotton is naturally breathable, it’ll work wonders at keeping you cool. It’s cotton on the inside and out (200 thread count no less) so it’s not only super soft, but hypoallergenic and machine washable too. There’s a bound hem for durability, but in case it fails your quality test, it also comes with a two-year guarantee.

When you think of wool, you generally think of heavy, itchy jumpers. Right? Well, Woolroom’s Classic medium duvet is here to change your mind. Made from 100 percent British wool, this 7-10-tog cover is not only soft, but also naturally hypoallergenic and breathable, so it should keep you cool in the summer and warm in the winter. It’s been subjected to a rigorous double-scouring to remove as much of the, er, farm as possible, but sometimes a somewhat sheepy scent can linger for a few hours after opening, so be sure to air it well before you take it to bed.

In what world does sleeping on a cloud not sound like the best thing ever? That’s a rhetorical question, obvs. If the answer wasn’t a resounding yes, Panda wouldn’t have named their quilt as such and you can probably guess by the name that their products are made from bamboo. The Cloud cover is half bamboo and half nano microfibre with a rayon cover and it is delightful. It has a 300 thread count, is 10.5 togs and is made ‘Bavarian style’, which means it has individually stuffed pockets to ensure an even spread. And, thanks to that bamboo, it’s hypoallergenic, antibacterial and temperature regulating.

‘You can’t put a price on a good sleep,’ is Nectar’s motto. Obviously pillows, duvets and the like don’t come for free, but this brand has kept their prices reasonable, with duvets maxing out at £115 for a super king. Given the cost, there are no fancy embellishments and in fact they only make one kind – the All-Season – but it does everything you need it to. The blend of synthetic Smartfil and modal (derived from wood pulp and similar to rayon) is breathable and machine washable at 60ºc, it’s a good all-round 10.5 tog and non-allergenic. Plus, if you’re unhappy for any reason, it comes with a two-year-guarantee.
