The first Hurwundeki store – a mix of vintage boutique and trendy hair salon – was established in Spitalfields in 2004. Six years later and the East End unit now houses cherry-picked vintage alongside the successful Hurwundeki own-label – a wearable and well-priced collection of mens- and womenswear, designed in east London, which mixes British and Far Eastern heritage, with an arty east London twist.
Meanwhile, the salon has moved around the corner to Puma Court, a West End outpost has opened, just off the perennially modish Carnaby Street, and a café and retro homewares branch has now been set-up under the railway arches on Hackney’s Cambridge Heath Road.
The original store’s idiosyncratic interior (think exposed brick walls, stripped floorboards and an assortment of curios and antiques acting as props and display cabinets) complements the label’s garments perfectly – tartan and checks are often in evidence, while cuts of the shirts, shift dresses and chino-style trousers are of a unisex bent; the brand is particularly strong on winter coats, rain jackets, dresses and accessories, which include a fabulous array of bags, scarves, hats, braces and bow-ties for the modern dandy.
