Winter in London does get a little bleak, doesn’t it? All that wind and rain, frosty mornings, freezing cold nights,  Some might call it Dickensian, others will call it “objectively worse than summer”. There's a very real impact of all that darkness, and it's called SAD: Seasonal Affective Disorder. Luckily, there is something you can do to beat these next-level winter blues (London edition) though, and it's investing in quality light therapy.

The Scandinavian countries popularised it, which makes sense given the winter darkness they experience. These days you'll find SAD lamps across most Northern Hemisphere countries. The idea is you use it at certain times of the day, depending on the product, and it'll help your circadian rhythm think it's not quite so gloomy.

There's a load of variety too, so they're pretty easy to implement into your day-to-day routine. Here's a few of the best ones.

Whether you're WFH or at the office, it has to be said there's always times where being on the grind feels a little sad. To at least eliminate the SAD feeling (see the difference) this table lamp from Lumie is a bright idea.

It projects the optimum 10,000lux at 22cm (far enough away for you to not knock it over) but there's four brightness settings to choose from. There's also contrast lighting for reading, and a flexible light for convenience. Plus at John Lewis, there’s a three year guarantee.

Rise and shine, remember how that feels? As opposed to the rise and stumble out of bed while it's all cold and dark. Nice bit of morning sun, nothing quite like it. Except, there is.

This wake up light and alarm clock is designed to help you start the day as well as possible. There's 20 different lighting intensities, five sounds (you can just use light if you prefer) and radio. You can set it to both slowly brighten up in the morning, and to wind down as you go to sleep.

As for snoozing the thing in the morning, you literally just give the front of it a good tap (or a smack if you're really grouchy) and it'll stop for a little. You can set a second alarm on it also, ideal for sleeping! It'll work nicely as a lamp too.

If you’re looking for a stylish option, this might well be the pick for you. The design elements of this aren’t just kept to the looks though, the aesthetic copper finish is actually a backlight feature which works as a softer light that can help to replicate dusk and dawn (making it perfect for the evenings). The Lumie Halo delivers 10,000 lux (at 20cm) on maximum brightness, which will recreate the effect of natural sunlight – making it feel more like LA than LDN. You can adjust the brighten as needed though.

Say you don’t fancy blasting a bright lamp once a day (or are simply guaranteed to forget to), what do you do? Well, you change the main lights in the room instead! These imitate sunlight, so they’ll help you sort your sleep out while simultaneously helping you get over the winter blues. They’re also UV-Free, full spectrum light, so they are good on the eye, and can last as long as 3000 hours of continuous use, which is ages. They’ll work across lamps, wall lights and more. Ideal. Summer every day.

Thérapie par la lumière the French would call it, not sure why you need to know that, but you are welcome all the same. Anyway, this lightweight, compact, light is an ideal one for taking around on the go – the dimensions are similar though slightly thicker than an iPad, so it’ll slide into a bad no problem if you reckon you need a hit of light in the office or on your travels. It clocks in at a mere 665g. There’s 115 ratings on Amazon which average out 4.5 stars, so it seems people are generally impressed with the product!

Price: £127.25 (at time of publishing)

For another compact, less expensive light, the LifeLight is primed in getting you the daily dose of up to 10,000 lux. It uses an LED panel for illumination, which makes it longer lasting and low-energy without losing any of the sun-emulating qualities we need. There’s a ten stage dimming system, and three buttons that make the little machine very easy to arrange. There’s a choice between a nice clean white and a sharp silver, which will make sure it looks on point at home, but you can very easily take this places with you too.
