Talent-spotting new jewellery design is made easy at Electrum Gallery, where a good deal of stock is conveniently under one roof. Now under new management, Electrum’s new sister gallery is the mixed-media (glass, ceramics and textiles) Contemporary Applied Arts. At the South Molton Street shop, around 100 designers are represented at any one time, so the range of styles and budgets is huge. Gerda Flöckinger, CBE, works with fused 18ct yellow gold (from £700), while Jo Hayes-Ward uses computer-aided design to create works in stainless steel and aluminium as well as precious metals. A new star arrival to Electrum’s sparkling firmament is Karola Torkos, a young, up-and-coming designer with two collections: one working with colourful plastics, and the other with precious metals (from £100).
