Hackney Road's hair scene just got a whole lot hipper. Butchers – the joint project of Susannah Jones, a former director at Aveda, and art-school trained editorial stylist Katie Knox – offers fashion-forward cuts in a minimalist, industrial-chic setting (think concrete walls and massive windows). As well as cutting-edge snips (from £45), great colour jobs are a speciality here, with Fabuloso and L'Oreal products used for anything from highlights to all-out reinventions (full head colour starts at £55). Shampoos, conditioners and styling products are by new natural haircare kids on the block Evo.
The conscientious all-girl team are friendly and fastidious – they won't go near you with colour unless you have a patch test – and attention to client experience is great. They'll even give you a pre-cut head and shoulder massage if you ask nicely.
Butchers aims to be a social hub as well as a salon – its space (a former bag-and-shoe wholesaler) is vast, and will be home to regular pop-up events, shows and exhibitions. Trust us – hanging out at your local hairdresser's has never been so cool.
