Yuu Kitchen is a satisfactory, if slightly gimmicky Asian fusion restaurant on the edge of Spitalfields, which serves up deracinated, on-trend dishes from Asia and the Pacific Rim – Taiwanese bao and Hawaiian poké, Chinese dumplings and Mexican tostadas – plus interesting cocktails incorporating plum wine, saké and shochu. Ambitious? Sure. Exceptional? Not really.
‘Very, very, very hot’ chicken wings were just mildly tingly. Salmon and pork belly bao were cold and underfluffy. The poké was delicious but the portion size was measly for £8. Barbecued octopus, scallop dumplings, chocolate spring rolls: there’s lots of cool stuff to sample here, but nothing that’ll blow you away.
All this happens in a room covered in massive manga murals. And, if social media is your thing, Yuu has got it covered: its many accounts are all painted on the wall.
