There are ‘destination’ restaurants and there are neighbourhood restaurants – this beloved Greek-Cypriot gaff, behind a distinctive turquoise shopfront, is both. Its atmosphere is down-homey and informal, with the grub cooked in front of you on an open grill. But these dishes are so exquisite – so perfectly rendered and cooked with such love – that it’s become a foodie haven over the years. Expect no-frills classics done to the highest standard and at prices that won’t break the bank. Melty pork shoulder that’s been cooked all day, chunky hummus that’s a million miles away from insipid supermarket fare, moussaka that oozes with thickly layered béchamel: none of this will win prizes for innovation, but it will keep you coming back for more.

Tsiakkos’ tiramisu, a towering pile of sponge cake with oodles of cream, is an engineering marvel.
