West Londoners are pretty spoilt for choice when it comes to hoity-toity cafés and coffee shops. But it doesn’t always have to be that way, as Sweet Things proves. First launched in Primrose Hill, this understated, cheap-and-cheerful second branch is right on Blenheim Crescent, a mere hop away from the bustle of Portobello Road. So for a bit of respite, it’s perfect. The basic interiors are pleasant enough and we immediately clocked the free wi-fi. As for puddings, a colourful pick of freshly made cakes sits proudly at the front of the shop.
The dainty Oreo cupcake was wonderfully moist, and for a more indulgent option, the s’more bar was a wicked treat – sticky, chocolate-y and moreish, if not a little on the sugary side. Throw in the frothiest chai latte, and we thought this place could do no wrong. That was until we discovered the list of sandwiches and savoury crêpes that really doesn’t need to be here. It might have been a good, quick call to fill a hole, but an unexpectedly tiny ham-and-cheese toasted bagel was far from exceptional. And on a busy Saturday afternoon, they somehow managed to run out of tomatoes. As the saying goes, stick to what you know – because when it comes to lush desserts, Sweet Things really shines.
