Chip shop dining areas can often seem to be merely an afterthought, but not so at Seafresh. This modest Cypriot-owned restaurant has a more formal approach to its customers’ dining experience than the average chippy, giving the humble dish the respect it deserves with attentive service and a full wine list. The menu contains a concise choice of seafood – mussels, scampi, scallops, squid – as well as whitebait and the usual species of fish.
The batter on the deep-fried calamares and the haddock was marginally too greasy, but their flesh was perfect inside the golden-crisped jackets: the calamares firm, but not chewy; the haddock clearly fresh, and not long from the surf to the table. The inoffensively decorated dining room has a serene but companionable air, with old boys reading the paper and couples enjoying a Cypriot beer and a first-rate fish supper together.
